One of the biggest problems for patients’ oral health and most common oral health conditions they experience is gum disease. If gum disease is not treated it can develop into severe or acute periodontal disease and must be treated with a specialized type of treatment. Typically gum disease can be fought against with regular cleanings, flossing and brushing.
What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing refer to the dental procedure of cleaning the tooth below the gum line. An instrument called a ‘scaler’ is used to clean below the gum line to remove tartar and plaque. This process ‘planes’ the root of the tooth and smooths it to allow the gum to re-heal around the surface of the tooth. Typically, local anesthetic is applied.
